At Cowboy & Co., all of our skincare starts with the same foundation: 100% organic, grass-fed & grass-finished tallow that’s rendered in-house and infused with healing herbs. But depending on how we finish that base, the texture and experience can feel very different.
If you’ve ever wondered whether to choose a whipped tallow or a tallow balm, this post breaks down the difference — and helps you find the one that fits your skin’s needs.
What is Whipped Tallow?
Our Whipped Tallow is light, fluffy, and cloud-like — think of it as skincare comfort food.
After we slowly render our suet and strain it to perfection, we whip it by hand with carefully selected organic oils (like rosehip, jojoba, or chia seed oil) and slow-infused botanicals. This process creates a soft, airy texture that melts instantly into the skin.
Best for:
-
Dry, sensitive, or reactive skin
-
Daily facial moisture
-
Baby skin and eczema-prone areas
-
Anyone who prefers a fast-absorbing, easy-to-apply formula
Texture: Light and whipped
Finish: Smooth, dewy, fast-absorbing
Popular options: Vanilla Whipped Tallow, Wild Rose Whipped Tallow
Important Note: Because whipped tallow is sensitive to heat, it may not withstand high-temperature environments. If you live in a warm climate like Texas, Arizona, or Florida, whipped tallow might melt during shipping or storage, leading to a loss of its fluffy texture.
What is Tallow Balm?
Our Tallow Balm is richer, denser, and more concentrated. It’s what we reach for when skin needs serious support — from wind-chapped cheeks to ranch-worn hands.
Tallow balm is poured, not whipped. That means fewer air pockets, a denser consistency, and a slower absorption — but deeper protection.
Best for:
-
Rough, cracked, or dry skin
-
Nighttime repair or deep moisture masks
-
Ranch hands, working hands, feet, elbows, and knees
-
Customers who want a minimal, multi-use product
Texture: Dense and creamy
Finish: Occlusive and ultra-moisturizing
Popular option: Cowboy Unscented Tallow Balm
Which One Should I Use?
Choose Whipped Tallow if...
-
You want a lightweight, everyday moisturizer
-
You’re using it on your face or baby’s skin
-
You want something that feels soft and luxurious
Choose Tallow Balm if...
-
You need extra protection or are dealing with serious dryness
-
You’re applying it at night or on hardworking areas
-
You prefer something with fewer added oils
Many customers love to use both: whipped tallow for the face and daytime use, balm for overnight healing and deep nourishment.
Living in Warm Climates
If you reside in states like Texas, Arizona, Florida, or other regions with high temperatures, tallow balm is the better choice. Its enhanced formulation and creamy texture hold up well in heat, ensuring you receive a product that remains intact and effective, no matter the weather.
Both Start With the Same Cowboy & Co. Standards
No matter which formula you choose, you’re getting:
-
Hand-rendered, organic, grass-fed & finished tallow
-
Essential oil–free, herbal-infused skincare that’s safe for the whole family
-
Small-batch quality, crafted by a cowgirl in Wyoming
-
Ingredients your skin actually recognizes — and nothing it doesn’t
At Cowboy & Co., we believe simple skincare is powerful — and that texture matters just as much as ingredients. Whether you love the airy touch of a whipped tallow or the richness of a balm, both are deeply nourishing, long-lasting, and made with intention.
