If you’ve followed Cowboy & Co. for a while, you know I’m all about transparency. I believe you deserve to know exactly what goes into your skincare—especially when it comes to something as powerful and healing as tallow.
But here’s something many people don’t realize: suet—the fat I use to make my tallow—is incredibly limited.
So… What Is Suet?
Suet is the clean, hard fat that surrounds the kidneys of a cow. It’s not the same as regular fat or trimmings—it’s the most nutrient-dense, purest fat on the animal. That’s what makes it so special for skin: it mimics our natural oils, supports healing, and is deeply nourishing.
It’s also the only fat I use to make my tallow.
How Much Suet Does a Cow Yield?
Not much.
Even a large, well-finished cow only produces 10 to 25 pounds of suet. That’s it. And I’m not talking about just any suet—I only source USDA Organic, grass-fed and grass-finished suet from one trusted ranch. This means:
-
No GMOs
-
No antibiotics
-
No hormones
-
Full traceability
-
Raised with care, not chemicals
The Problem? More Brands Are Buying It Up
Over the last few years, I’ve watched the price of organic suet nearly double—and it’s still climbing. As tallow skincare becomes more popular, more companies are buying up the limited supply of quality suet.
And when you combine that with the fact that each animal produces so little? We’re looking at real shortages on the horizon.
What This Means for You
I’ve done everything I can to keep my prices accessible—because I believe good skincare should be within reach. But I also refuse to cut corners. I won’t switch to lower-quality fat. I won’t buy from non-organic sources. I won’t compromise the integrity of what I make.
So while prices of ingredients may rise, and some products may become limited at times, I’ll always be honest with you about it.
Because I’m not just building a brand—I’m building trust.
