Get to Know the Plant Chamomile

From the sun-drenched meadows of Europe to the edges of cozy backyard gardens across the world, chamomile has earned its place as one of the most beloved and versatile herbs. Belonging to the Asteraceae (daisy) family, chamomile is most commonly found in two forms:

  • Matricaria recutita (German chamomile)

  • Chamaemelum nobile (Roman chamomile)

Though technically different plants, both are commonly referred to as "chamomile" and share similar appearances, scents, and healing properties. German chamomile is typically favored in herbal preparations across North America, while Roman chamomile is more widespread in the UK and parts of Europe.

The Chamomile Plant

Gentle in appearance but mighty in benefits, chamomile has long been known as “the plant’s physician” — believed to support the health of neighboring plants when grown in gardens.

German chamomile is an annual that grows upright and can reach up to 3 feet tall, with sweet, apple-scented blooms. It’s easily propagated by seed and known for self-sowing when left to grow wild.

Roman chamomile, on the other hand, is a low-growing perennial that spreads along the ground. Its name comes from the Greek khamai melon, meaning "ground apple," referring to its delicious aroma. Its blossoms are slightly larger and it’s often used as a living groundcover in cottage gardens.

Both varieties thrive in full sun and require only moderate watering — making them ideal for low-maintenance garden lovers.

Harvesting & Preserving Chamomile

Harvesting chamomile is an act of patience and presence. The healing properties lie in the flower heads, which should be picked at full bloom — just when the white petals start to bend back slightly.

Tips for harvesting:

  • Pick in the morning once dew has evaporated

  • Dry flowers quickly and away from direct sunlight to preserve volatile oils

  • Store in airtight containers as they reabsorb moisture easily

Chamomile’s Energetics

In herbalism, chamomile is a balancing plant — both grounding and uplifting.

  • Flavor – Bitter and sweet

  • Temperature – Cooling

  • Moisture – Moist

  • Element – Water

  • Planet – Sun

  • Meridians – Liver, stomach, lungs

Folklore & Magic of Chamomile

Chamomile has deep roots in folklore and spiritual tradition. The Egyptians revered it as sacred, dedicating it to their sun god, Ra, believing it held the healing energy of the sun itself.

In Norse legend, chamomile was gifted to the people by Woden (Odin), as one of the Nine Sacred Herbs. Across Europe, it was used in protective wreaths, bonfires, and even sprinkled in homes to ward off bad energy and misfortune.

It was said to symbolize patience in adversity, making it not just a physical remedy, but a spiritual one, too.

The Lure of Chamomile – Uses Then & Now

Chamomile has been used for centuries to soothe the mind, body, and spirit. While we often think of it as a calming tea, its uses go far beyond the teacup.

Traditional uses include:

  • Easing digestive discomfort

  • Relieving menstrual cramps

  • Calming stress and anxiety

  • Soothing teething in babies

  • Treating skin irritations, puffiness, and inflammation

  • Promoting restful sleep

In skincare, chamomile is a powerful botanical for calming red, irritated skin — making it a perfect fit for natural lotions, balms, and oils.
