FAQ: Your Questions, Answered
TALLOW 101
What is tallow, and why is it good for my skin?
Tallow is a natural fat sourced from grass-fed cattle. It’s incredibly nourishing because its composition closely resembles the natural oils found in human skin. Packed with vitamins A, D, E, and K, tallow hydrates deeply, repairs skin, and leaves it soft and smooth without clogging pores.
Who Is Tallow For?
Tallow is for anyone seeking real, effective skincare — without the junk. Because it closely mimics our skin’s natural oils, it’s incredibly gentle and nourishing for all skin types.
Here’s who benefits most:
✔ Dry or Flaky Skin: Tallow is deeply hydrating and helps replenish the skin barrier naturally.
✔ Sensitive or Reactive Skin: With no essential oils or synthetic ingredients, our tallow soothes without irritation.
✔ Babies & Kids: Safe enough for newborn skin — no fragrances, no fillers, just pure, nutrient-rich fats.
✔ Eczema & Psoriasis: Customers with chronic skin conditions report relief from itching, flaking, and inflammation.
✔ Acne-Prone Skin: Tallow won’t clog pores. It helps calm inflammation, balance oil production, and support healing.
✔ Aging or Damaged Skin: Packed with vitamins A, D, E & K, tallow supports skin repair and elasticity.
Whether you’re a ranch hand, a new mama, or someone who’s just tired of complicated routines that don’t work—tallow is for you.
is your tallow grass-fed and grass-finished?
At Cowboy & Co., we believe not all tallow is created equal.
Our tallow comes from 100% USDA Organic certified, grass-fed and grass-finished beef, sourced from a regenerative ranch in California. These cattle spend their entire lives grazing freely on open pastures, without ever being fed GMOs, corn, soy, or other grains, and are raised without antibiotics.
Just clean grass, fresh air, and a life that honors the natural rhythms of the land.
The ranches we partner with go beyond sustainability — they practice regenerative agriculture, employing rotational grazing to mimic the natural movement of wild herds. This method restores soil health, encourages native grasses to flourish, and actively pulls carbon back into the earth. It's better for the cattle, the soil, the planet — and ultimately, for you.
Why does Organic Grass-Fed and Grass-finished matter for your skin?
Cattle raised on rich, regenerative pastures produce suet that’s naturally higher in nutrients like stearic acid, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and vitamin E — essential for moisturizing, strengthening, and protecting the skin. In fact, grass-fed and grass-finished beef has been shown to have quadruple the amount of Vitamin E compared to grain-fed cattle.
At Cowboy & Co., we craft skincare that’s as pure and powerful as the land it comes from — because your skin deserves better than compromise.
What makes your tallow special?
At Cowboy & Co., we believe that how tallow is rendered matters just as much as where it comes from.
There are two main methods for rendering tallow: the wet render and the dry render. The wet method involves adding water and salt to the suet to "refine" and separate impurities — but this process often needs to be repeated multiple times, and introduces water into a fat-based product, increasing the risk of contamination and bacterial growth.
We do things differently. After years of experience and careful research, we proudly use the dry render method — melting the suet low and slow without adding water. This preserves the full nutrient profile, maintains the natural fatty acid balance, and gives our tallow a longer, more stable shelf life.
Just like we use raw, virgin, cold-pressed and unrefined oils, we believe our tallow should remain as pure, untouched, and therapeutic as nature intended.
Unlike many brands that rely on pre-rendered suet from unknown suppliers, every batch of tallow at Cowboy & Co. is hand-trimmed, ground, and rendered in-house by me, start to finish.
We work exclusively with 100% suet from USDA Organic, grass-fed and grass-finished cattle — no shortcuts, no compromises.
How do I use your tallow balm?
A little goes a long way! Simply scoop a small amount, warm it between your fingers, and apply it to dry or irritated skin. Use it on your face, hands, elbows, feet, or anywhere that needs extra hydration and care.
Why do you infuse your oils with herbs instead of using essential oils in your tallow?
At Cowboy & Co., we believe in honoring the full power of nature—slowly and gently. Instead of using essential oils, which can be harsh or sensitizing for many skin types (especially babies and sensitive skin), we infuse our oils with whole, organic herbs and florals over time. This method allows the plant’s full spectrum of benefits to be extracted—vitamins, minerals, and healing compounds—without the risk of irritation. It also means our products smell naturally soft, earthy, and never artificial. Just pure, plant-powered goodness the way nature intended.
Does tallow smell like beef?
At Cowboy & Co., we dry render our tallow once, low and slow, to preserve as many nutrients as possible. Unlike many brands that "over-purify" their tallow to strip it of scent (and, unfortunately, its vitamins), we believe in keeping it close to its natural form.
Our tallow has a soft, slightly sweet and nutty aroma — a sign of quality and purity. Since we don’t refine it beyond what’s necessary, a mild tallow scent can still be present. It’s subtle, earthy, and honest — just the way nature made it.
What happens if my tallow melts in transit?
Great question — and not to worry! Tallow is a natural, oil-based product and can soften or melt in warmer temperatures, especially during the summer months. This is totally normal and doesn’t impact the quality or benefits of your balm.
We always ship your orders with plenty of ice packs during hot weather and use USPS Priority Mail to get it to you quickly and safely. If your tallow arrives melted, just give it a gentle stir (if needed) and pop it in the fridge for about an hour to firm it back up.
Melting is simply a sign of how pure and natural your tallow really is — no fillers, no synthetic stabilizers, just the good stuff.
How should I store my tallow products?
Store your tallow balm in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. If properly stored, it will last 9 months due to its natural stability.
Is it normal for tallow to vary in texture?
At Cowboy & Co., we use the same premium ingredients in every batch—100% USDA organic, grass-fed and grass-finished tallow, carefully rendered in-house. However, because tallow is an animal-based product, you may notice slight differences in texture from jar to jar. That’s simply nature doing her thing.
Variations in consistency are influenced by the cattle’s environment—everything from the climate to their age and breed. The tallow we use comes from suet, the fat surrounding the kidneys and organs, which is rich in nourishing fatty acids. These fatty acids vary slightly in structure from animal to animal, affecting how firm or soft the final product is.
You might also notice seasonal shifts. Tallow tends to firm up in cooler weather and soften in warmer temperatures. Prefer it more solid? Pop it in the fridge. Like it a bit softer? Keep it in a warmer space like your bathroom (though a heads-up: high humidity may cause some natural separation or “sweating”—this is completely normal).
No matter the texture, the quality and skin-loving benefits of your tallow balm remain exactly the same—always pure, always potent, always handcrafted with care.
